All airborne equipment must pass RTCA DO-160G conformance testing before being allowed to fly on commercial aircraft in many countries around the world. It is very expensive for aircraft equipment manufacturers to engage an accredited or certified test house to officially perform these tests, or to conduct in-house. If the test then fails, it must eventually be repeated at additional expense.

The XF-160GL3 allows a confidence check to be performed by generating the worst-case waveform (double exponential). This low-cost equipment allows the design engineer to have great confidence that DO-160G section 22 conformance will be achieved in certified testing. Furthermore, it can also be used to functionally check the lightning protection of in-service equipment. Typical application examples of use are given in the user manual.
